The GTM Slop Problem, Part 1.5: When Coding Agents Become the New Gatekeepers

The next wave of coding agents may reshape B2B tech vendor selection before most GTM teams are ready.
I read the new Amplifying / ai-benchmarks report on Claude Code and had a pretty visceral reaction: this research, while limited in scope, has potentially serious implications for how software gets chosen (or ignored altogether). This isn't your mother's GTM playbook!
If you haven't read the Amplifying / ai-benchmarks research, the gist is that AI systems are now choosing which tools get installed, configured, and pushed into a live project. Claude Code, Codex and the like are no longer just helping developers write code, they are becoming a new gatekeeper in technical vendor selection.
What makes this even more disruptive is that the real threat may not be losing to a better-known competitor. The model may actually decide that the software category does not need to be bought at all. It may simply build a sufficient MVP to replace its core capabilities and move on.

Ben Wilde, Head of Innovation at Georgian, said something to me the other day that gets right to this point: “If I can build an MVP of a company’s product in Claude Code in less than 48 hours, we are not investing.” That is a brutal filter, but an increasingly relevant one that is quickly becoming a market reality.
Coding agents are increasingly making a similar 'build-versus-buy' call on the fly, often before much human agency enters the process at all. The GTM implications are hard to ignore.
So the long and short of it is that your SaaS or AI product, the one you spent countless hours building, debugging, testing and improving may be made irrelevant before it gets a real shot in the market.
In some categories, the first vendor shortlist is no longer being shaped by a buyer comparing companies on websites, analyst reports, and review pages. It is being shaped inside the repo by the model. And if the model does not know you, trust you, or see you as the easiest credible default, you may get passed over.
The Amplifying study puts numbers behind this shift. The team ran 2,430 open-ended prompts through Claude Code across 20 tool categories, 4 greenfield repos, and 3 models, with no vendor names inserted into the prompts.
The results were consistent enough to take seriously, with 76% phrasing stability and strong agreement across repeated runs and model versions.
Claude Code showed clear default behavior in several categories, picking GitHub Actions for build and release workflows about 94% of the time, Stripe in payments about 91% of the time, and shadcn/ui in UI components about 90% of the time.
The pattern went beyond a few headline winners. Depending on the repo context, the model also defaulted heavily to tools like Vercel, Postgres, Tailwind, Sentry, pytest, and Drizzle
In 12 of the 20 categories, Claude Code often skipped third-party vendors entirely and built a custom or DIY solution instead.

Those defaults were not fixed. The report found that newer models often favored newer tools, which suggests agent-driven vendor share can move faster than most teams expect.
That's a far step from the original Anthropic definition of Claude Code, "Claude Code is an agentic coding tool that reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with your development tools."
Most B2B tech vendors still think they are competing for awareness, analyst attention, review-site momentum, or a place on a human buyer’s shortlist. They are, but they are also competing for something else: whether the model sees them as the most credible, lowest-friction choice for the job in front of it. That is a very different problem.
It is less about abstract awareness and more about product implementation readiness in context. If the agent can choose a competitor with more confidence, or decide it can do without your category entirely, your market position gets weaker well before a seller ever gets in the room.
This is much bigger than AI search
AI search changed B2B software discovery. Coding agents are changing implementation, and arguably that is a much bigger shift considering the product lifecycle compression we are seeing with AI.
G2 said that in its August 2025 survey, 87% of B2B software buyers said AI chatbots are changing how they research products and services, and half said they now start the buying journey in a chatbot instead of traditional Google search. That alone changes what gets pulled into the first round of consideration.
And it fits a broader shift already underway. Millennials and Gen Z now make up roughly 70% of B2B buyers, about 60% of searches end without a click, and 94% of B2B buyers are now using LLMs or other AI tools before they engaging a vendor. In other words, discovery is already moving away from the old model of search, click, website, demo.
Coding agents push that change one step further by becoming the gatekeeper, in case the above wasn't enough already! They not only shape what gets researched (for some users), but also what gets implemented. In search, being visible may be enough to earn a look, but in an agent workflow, you may need to be the option the model is comfortable choosing.
This is much closer to "default" status than product or brand awareness, and a lot of commercial teams are underestimating what is happening here. The old playbook still has a role, but it just doesn't cover the whole field anymore. Coding agents radically compress the buying journey it by moving the first pass of B2B SaaS and AI selection inside the workflow itself.

How to adapt to coding agents as gatekeepers
If you sell a technical product, assume coding agents are becoming part of vendor selection whether you are ready for it or not. That means a few things need to change fast.
First, make your product easy to understand in one pass. Be brutally clear about what job it does, who it is for, and why it is the right choice in a real workflow. If your positioning is
vague, bloated, or sounds like everyone else, the model has a much easier ti
me picking something simpler.
Second, treat technical docs as GTM, not support. Your quick-start guides, SDKs, install flows, and migration guides are now part of how the product gets evaluated. If the implementation path is messy, unclear, or buried under too much noise, you are making it easier for the agent to route around you.
Third, show proof that is easy to trust.
What matters now is showing real examples, clear use cases, and credible implementation patterns that make your product feel like the sensible, low-friction choice for the job.
Fourth, be honest about your moat. If a coding agent can recreate most of your value with built-in tools and a few files of code, marketing harder is not the answer. You may need to move up the stack and sell the harder layer the model cannot easily replace, whether that is category expertise governance, or business outcome.
And finally, test your own product the way the market increasingly will.
Drop Claude Code, Codex, or another agent into a clean environment and see what happens. Does it choose you? Does it know how to implement you? Does it understand why you belong? If not, that is not a future problem. It is a current GTM problem.
The point of this detour
I put this Part 1.5 into the series because the GTM slop problem is getting harder, not easier.
Most vendors still think the job is to publish more messaging, run more campaigns, and create more awareness.
But in a world of answer engines and coding agents, that old playbook runs out of road fast. You need a product that is easy for both humans and agents to understand, proof that survives the first skeptical prompt, and a commercial story clear enough that the model can see why you belong.
